THE CHALLENGE Chair Fighters matches two people in identical professional fighting chairs and uses size 80 wide reels for adults and size 50 reels for juniors. Each reel is set at 50 lbs drag for adults and 20 lbs for juniors. The match consists of a two minute time limit; the objective is to pull the teaser lure four feet from the center to your side. Strategic players will play the clock, since the winner can also be determined by which angler possesses the lure once the time runs out.
Chair Fighters started in Jimmy Whitley’s garage. It was a rainy day, and Jimmy was putting off his long chore list while dreaming about being in a fighting chair with a big marlin hooked up. Jimmy did some more tinkering and sweeping, more dreaming – and then the idea came to him: pit two fish-savvy competitors against each other in a simulated test of endurance and technique with the same gear charter fishermen use. Jimmy shared his idea with some friends, and Chair Fighters was born. Since then, it has evolved from a small show at local events on Hilton Head Island to a major draw at gatherings up and down the east coast from New Jersey to south Florida.
